Lawman/B, C+

Valdez is Coming/C+, B-

US/1970/1971/Color/Widescreen1.85:1/1.66:1/Mono/Directed by Michael Winner/Edwin Sherrin/Starring Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan/Burt Lancaster, Susan Clark/MGM-UA/24 Chaps/26 Chaps/Theatrical Trailer/2 discs/CLV/$59.98

Two Burt Lancaster films make a welcome double feature from MGM/UA. Lawman, the earlier of these "mature" Lancaster films has the better script but suffers interminably from the heavy hand of director Michael Winner. Winner, who several years later would ignite the box office with the Charles Bronson vigilante movie Death Wish, undermines the solid performances and tight script with some appalling camera work. It was like he had just discovered the zoom lens. Seemed like every other shot was punctuated by an emphatic zoom of the lens. There’s a burial scene that actually used about a half dozen zooms. Boys with toys. Watch out folks. It sort of mirrors the contemporary problem movies are having with keeping the lid on special effects.

Despite the director’s intrusions, Lawman is a very entertaining Western about devotion to duty. Along with Lancaster’s determined performance as Marshal Jared Maddox, Robert Ryan lends stolid support as a weak local lawman and Lee J. Cobb is excellent as the rancher called to judgment for irresponsible leadership.

Valdez is Coming is a simple tale from an Elmore Leonard novel. Lancaster is Mexican deputy sheriff Bob Valdez who kills a man that was falsely accused by a powerful and ruthless land owner. Remorseful, Valdez asks the rancher to contribute a small sum to the dead man’s widow. He refuses Valdez contemptuously. Valdez decides to enforce his sense of right.

Directed by Edwin Sherrin, Valdez in Coming fails to reach it’s potential. Sherrin does a workmanlike job in setting up the scenes, but he fails to give his actors strong leadership. This is the only film I can ever recall Burt Lancaster using an accent. His performance is stoic, unrelenting, and, yes, somewhat wooden. Maybe he was bound too tightly by the Mexican accent. Jon Cypher plays villain Frank Tanner with all the enthusiasm of a well meaning amateur. Susan Clark is along to provide female company.

The source material for both films is clean but suffers from color fading. Lawman exhibits more excess of grain, but both transfers are sharp enough to provide a good entertainment platform. The mono sound is reproduced cleanly without hiss.
