Revolutionary Internet Movie Delivery System-Follow-Up

By Stu Kobak

Follow-up March 24, 1999

With their announcement of Clickmovie.com on March 22, Tranz-Send has placed a burr underneath hordes of Internet cynics. Cries of hoax are loud, profiteering, vaporware and scam are other epithets being bandied about by those who have been burned by hype in the past. But it appears that Clickmovie may just allay all those fears.

After a frustrating day of trying to get through to the clickmovie.com site, the Internet finally cooperated today. Tranz-Send has certainly put an enormous amount of work into their site. Lots of big product names are associated on the pages. The site is ambitious in scope. Not all the links are working, but the "trailer park" links are active. There is an announcement of a Film Festival contest on one page, not a bad idea for a company looking for movies to send out over the Internet and perhaps a unique opportunity for filmmakers to get their visions into distribution. There's also a section called Personal TV which appears to be another way to get product out tot he International market. Tranz - Send is aggressively soliciting content. They even have an Associates Program proposed as a way of spreading their Video on Demand gospel. The Video Shelves area is not active yet and The Film Archives area suggests an impressive initial depth of classic titles. Looks like we'll have to wait until May to access any of this video Nirvana.

Now, if Tranz-Send delivers their movies on demand in the time frame and speed promised, we will be talking different issues of quality. Remember that MPEG-2 has its own set of compression artifacts that come along with the beautiful images and it takes a great amount of care to produce the purest images for home enjoyment. Will the extreme compressions needed to deliver Video on Demand over the Internet prove too much for image quality? Stay tuned to find out more.
