October 23, 2000

The most imaginative sections of The Cell (12/19/00) are likely to provide powerhouse DVD images. The thriller starring Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn is being released by New Line as a special edition with audio commentary by and other features.

October 21, 2000

The special effects laden Hollow Man  (1/2/01) gets fleshed out as a special  DVD from Columbia.  Audio commentary features director Paul Verhoeven, star Kevin Bacon and writer Andrew Marlowe. A making of, 15 featurettes, another audio commentary with Jerry Goldsmith and deleted scenes.

Kino is releasing the Israeli drama Kadosh (11/28/00), the award winning film dealing with the conflict between religious and secular Jews in Israel, a subject you often hear of but one seldom if ever tackled on film.

October 18, 2000

The breathtakingly beautiful Camille Claudel (1/23/01) is being released by MGM in a widescreen DVD. No indication that it will be enhanced. Isabelle Adjani gives a startling performance as the pathetic sculptress. The French film was directed by Bruno Nuytten.

Christopher McQuarrie gets his shot at directing after penning the script for Usual Suspects. McQuarrie's film  The Way of the Gun (12/19/00) did not light up box office nor cast a sparkle in critical eyes. The special edition from Artisan includes commentary from McQuarrie and behind the scenes material. Anamorphic widescreen 16 x 9 enhanced.

Get ready to muster up your appetite. MGM is releasing Babette's Feast (1/21/01) in a widescreen edition (No aspect details announced). The 1987 Danish/French production includes some cooking to die for.

Jean de Florette (1/23/010) and its sequel, Manon of the Spring (1/23/00) are coming from  MGM.  DVDs  will be widescreen 2.35, but no announcement on anamorphic enhancement as yet. Gerard Depardieu, Yves Montand and Daniel Auteuil and gorgeous Emmanuelle Beart  bring Claude Berri's films to life.

October 14, 2000

Good critical reception did keep Wonder Boys (1/9/01) from winding up in the box office dust bin. The Curtis Hanson film starring Michael Douglas gets a chance for renewed vitality in a special edition from Paramount, including audio commentary by Hanson and filmed cast and crew interviews. Anamorphic widescreen 2.35 16 x 9 enhanced.

Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger trade barbs in the 1967 Best Picture Oscar© winner  In the Heat of the Night (1/9/01). Director Norman Jewison provides audio commentary to shed some light on the night. Anamorphic widescreen enhanced.

October 13, 2000

When  you think of best screen comic orgasms does When Harry Met Sally (1/9/01) come top mind? MGM is releasing the 1989 comedy in a new anamorphic enhanced widescreen version packaged with interviews with director, writer and stars.

Benny and Joon (1/9/01) gets dressed in special edition clothing from MGM. Stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Aidan Quinn and Johnny Depp do excellent work to bring director Jeremiah Checkik's 1993 eccentric film to life. Audio commentary and deleted scenes and more. Widescreen enhanced.

When the doorbell rings for the DVD delivery man it may be a copy of Mystic Pizza (1/9/01) coming from MGM in anamorphic widescreen 16 x 9 enhanced. The 1988 film delivered the first delightful dose of Julia Roberts to hungry audiences. Grab a slice.

October 12, 2000

The very likeable animated film The Road to El Dorado (12/12/00) is be coming from Dreamworks. No added specials but count on  breathtaking images.

Alan Rudolph fans get his latest in a special edition from Columbia. Trixie (12/5/00), starring Emily Watson and Nick Nolte, has been described as a screwball noir. Rudolph provides audio commentary.

October 9, 2000

Buena Vista is putting together a fully packed special edition of Dinosaur (1/30/01), including extensive commentary and practically a course in reconstructing dinosaurs. A movie-only edition is being released on the same date. For those of you who saw Dinosaur in its digital theater runs, now you can compare.

October 7, 2000

The breathtaking Gong Li stars in Zhang Yi-mou's Shanghai Triad (12/12/00). Columbia is delivering the moody Chinese film in an anamorphic widescreen 16 x 9 enhanced edition. 

Here's one that sounds like it has big potential. Peter Jackson's (Heavenly Creatures) mockumentary Forgotten Silver (12/19/00) is being released as a special edition by First Run Features. Super star director Peter Jackson discovers a cache of films he never heard of and proves New Zealand's Colin McKenzie made movie history before Griffith, Lumiere, and other titans of the birth of cinema.

October 3, 2000

Huzzahs for Paramount. They are bringing out a special edition of 1974's The Conversation (11/21/00) which will include audio commentary by Francis Ford Coppola and sound editor Walter Murch. Having Murch's observation on this film about sound surveillance is a real coup. Harry Caul may be Gene Hackman's best performance. One of the great small films.

Taylor Hackford takes the audio commentary for Paramount's special edition of An Officer and a Gentlemen (12/12/00). Richard Gere and Debra Winger provide the sexual fire and Louis Gossett, Jr. barks order with ferocious style in the 1982 film.

October 1, 2000

The often fascinating revisionist 1996 western Dead Man (12/19/00) is on the way from Buena Vista in a special edition including audio commentary, deleted footage, and outtakes. Should be a great disc in beautiful black and white with added insight from director Jim Jarmusch. Johnny Depp stars and Robert Mitchum has a small but powerful role in his last film. 

Everybody's favorite cable series, The Sopranos (12/12/00), makes it's DVD bow in a four disc set of the first season. James Gandolfini  and company get an anamorphic 16 x 9 widescreen treatment for DVD and HBO is delivering a special edition with audio commentary included with episode one. There are also two featurettes and a video interview with creator David Chase conducted by Peter Bogdanovich.
